HAROLD Version 7.2 Release

Created:
03 Mar 2026

We are pleased to announce the release of Photon Design's Harold version 7.2

Here is a summary of the key changes:

  • Launch of the Harold Quantum Dot module.
  • Harold, HaroldXY and HaroldVCSEL modules:
    • Added support for multi-junction devices. These devices have multiple (M)QW active regions separated by bulk and/or tunnel-junction layers.
    • Added non-local band-to-band tunnelling model. This model provides a more realistic description of the tunnelling processes within tunnel-junction layers.
    • Added QW k.p results. These show the dispersion of the electrons and holes in the QWs as a function of in-plane wavenumber.
  • HaroldXY and HarlodVCSEL modules:
    • The electric field is now computed in insulator layers. This means that the capacitive effects of buried insulators are now included in the simulation.
    • Spectral results can now be plotted against either wavelength or photon energy.
    • Added QW Profile results. These are 1D profiles of the QW band structure and wavefunctions (equivalent to Quantum Well Wavefunction results in HaroldGain).
    • Improved convergence of simulations containing pn-blocking buried heterostructures
  • HaroldXY module:
    • Added operational Wavelength simulation option. This allows the user to choose whether to use a fixed lasing wavelength or to allow the lasing wavelength to follow the peak of the gain spectrum.

Brief Snippets of Other News:

OmniSim: New release imminent with upgrades to dynamic gain model for simulating PCSELs and PCLs alongside HAROLD.

TFLN Modulators: Photon Design have recently added a series of articles on modeling TFLN Modulators at www.photond.com highlighting the ability to model the full structure in MT-FIMMPROP; and also include traveling wave electrodes in PICWave.
