FRED for Universities

Photon Engineering proudly makes its raytracing software FRED available for student use in the classroom and for thesis/dissertation work free of charge.

FRED's flexibility means that it can be used for a wide variety of research areas across multiple departments. Its ease of use makes it very suitable for classroom teaching in general optics as well as engineering-focused applications.

Optical model of eye Interferometer

Example applications:
Imaging, lens design, laser systems, diffraction effects, interferometry, illumination, LEDs, biomedical, fiber coupling, ghost images, stray light analysis, Fabry-Perot and more.

University Gratis Licensing program (for teaching):
This is for educators that believe that the FRED Optical Engineering Software package can be used to enhance the curriculum by providing students with hands on experience using a professionally recognized engineering software tool.

University Gratis Licensing program (for students):
This is for senior-level or graduate students working on a thesis or dissertation. The student may be eligible for a free full version of FRED. Qualifying students must have a letter from their faculty adviser verifying their current status at the university.

Photon Engineering regularly host courses on various topics in optical engineering. These intensive courses often span two or three days and are hosted by experts in their respective fields. These courses are not software specific (no software programs are used during the class), but aim to educate the attendee on the language, science, theory, techniques, and calculations involved.

FRED is a low cost option with no limitation on capability, is a permanent license with no necessary add-ons and low support costs. Furthermore, university researchers are entitled to discounts on software licenses.
